Why

The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services and the Tahoe National Forest have a vested interest in supporting wildfire resilient communities in Nevada County. As such, both organizations are using a Good Neighbor Agreement to collaboratively reduce wildfire risk by treating hazardous vegetation along priority roads within the Tahoe National Forest in Nevada County. This portion of the project is targeting nearly 365 acres along 22 miles of roadway in the area of Cruzon Grade Road.

What

Cruzon Grade Road traverses the San Juan Ridge east of North Columbia and north of Malakoff Diggins State Park, extending eastward toward the outskirts of Graniteville. The 2025 Nevada County Community Wildfire Protection Plan identified this ridgeline as a mix of Highest and High priority project areas due to its alignment with the South Yuba Canyon, prevailing wind patterns, and the dense, fireprone vegetation along the roadway. Establishing a shaded fuel break in this part of the Tahoe National Forest will enhance emergency ingress and egress while providing firefighters with a stronger tactical advantage to contain wildfires in the area.

Impact

This project will install and strengthen a network of shaded fuel breaks throughout the Tahoe National Forest and enhance public and first responder safety during a wildfire event. In addition to modifying wildfire behavior, shaded fuel breaks typically result in an improvement of forest health, and bolster forest resilience to wildfire, drought, and effects of climate change.

If more funding can be secured, OES is prepared to continue this partnership with the Tahoe National Forest in building and maintaining over 3,000 acres of strategic, defendable control points during wildfire events.
