South County Shaded Fuel Break

What

The South County Shaded Fuel Break is a 181 acre project designed to create safe ingress for first responders and egress for evacuating residents. This completed project treated 75-ft on either side of the roadway to create a shaded fuel break that is a total of 150-ft wide in the vicinity of Alta Sierra.  

Where

This project runs west-east from HWY 49 along Buck Mountain Road and Lodestar Drive to Dog Bar Rd. Additionally, this project includes a portion of Brewer Rd from the intersection of Buck Mountain Rd and Lodestar south.

Impact

  • 226 parcels are slated to participate in the public-private partnership 
  • Approximately 9 miles will be treated with a total of 150-ft hazardous fuels treatment 
  • 3,168 homes are within 1.5 miles of the project 
  • 30 critical facilities including an airport, 3 churches, 3 schools, and 4 potential shelter venues
  • The project serves as a vital wildfire holding point and improves a key evacuation route for residents 

Project Funders & Partners

Funding for this project was secured through CAL FIRE’s Wildfire Prevention Grant. The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County managed the project and implemented the shaded fuel break.
