Public Invited to Grant School House Dedication Ceremony Sept. 14

Home Posted on September 10, 2025

The Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission invites the public to attend a ceremony unveiling a historical plaque commemorating the Grant Schoolhouse, located at 135 Winchester St. in Grass Valley. The present Grant Schoolhouse was built on the site and opened in 1900.  The school closed in 1968 and the building has become a private residence.   It underwent a number of careful renovations and is considered one of the best preserved buildings in Grass Valley.

The Commission is especially hopeful that people who attended Grant School will come to the plaque unveiling at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14. The owner of the building will give tours of the downstairs. This is another step in the Commissions effort to obtain historical designation of the remaining 19th century school houses that played such an important part in the history of Nevada County.

The landmark will be featured in the next update to the Commissions interactive landmarks map, which can be accessed from our website nevadacountylandmarks.com, and in the next electronic edition of Exploring Nevada County, a guide to the over 250 historical landmarks in the County.
