June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Month

Home Posted on May 28, 2025

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. The purpose of World Elder Abuse Month is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older people by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. This month is a call-to-action for society’s individuals, organizations, and communities to educate each other on how to identify, address and prevent abuse so we can all do our part to support everyone as we age.

The color associated with elder abuse awareness is purple. Wearing purple or displaying purple ribbons on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15) is a way to show support and raise awareness about this issue.

This year’s event will feature a presentation by the Department of Developmental Services followed by a panel discussion on collaboration between Ventura County and Tri-Counties Regional Center and San Joaquin and Valley Mountain Regional Center.
