The Nevada County Assessor’s Office serves residents and taxpayers by providing fair, accurate, and transparent property assessments in accordance with the California Constitution and state law. The office is led by an elected Assessor serving a four-year term. Rolf D. Kleinhans was elected in June 2022, bringing decades of professional experience and a deep commitment to the Nevada County community.

Assessor Kleinhans has been a proud Nevada County resident since 1995 and has spent much of his career in public service. Under his leadership, the Assessor’s Office has earned a strong reputation for excellent customer service and professional integrity. Central to this success is a leadership philosophy that encourages initiative and accountability at every level. Staff are empowered to lead within their roles, collaborate across teams, and focus on solutions that best serve the public. As Assessor Kleinhans notes, “Any success is from the efforts of my team.” Together, the office remains focused on earning and maintaining the trust of Nevada County residents.

The office’s work is guided by its core values: accountability, transparency, collaboration, integrity, and service. These values shape daily operations and long-term initiatives, from staff development and cross-training to improving public access to information. By holding itself to high ethical and professional standards, the Assessor’s Office ensures taxpayers can rely on consistent and accurate assessments.

Since taking office, Assessor Kleinhans and his team have implemented improvements to enhance transparency, efficiency, and communication. These efforts include expanded staff training, taxpayer education on available tax relief programs, clearer Notice of Assessed Value communications, updated forms available online, and the publication of the 2024 and 2025 Annual Reports. The office has also strengthened internal collaboration and partnerships across county departments to improve service delivery.

Assessor Kleinhans’ commitment to public service is rooted in his strong ties to the community. He and his wife, Karin, have raised their family in Nevada County and enjoy the area’s outdoor recreation and natural beauty, reflecting the same care and dedication he brings to his work.

The Nevada County Assessor’s Office remains committed to serving the public with professionalism, accuracy, and accessibility. Staff are always available to answer questions or address concerns.
