[ARCHIVED] Ghost Storyteller Mark Lyon Returns with Tales of the Fairy Folk

True Encounters Newsflash

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. — The Grass Valley Library invites the public to a free presentation by acclaimed storyteller and author Mark Lyon, who will explore spine-tingling tales of mischievous fairies from around the world. Lyon, best known for his chilling accounts of ghosts and haunted places, returns with a new presentation, “True Encounters with the Fairy Folk,” on Tuesday, April 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the Grass Valley Library.

Tricksters and Dark Spirits

Far from the glittering, benevolent fairies of popular lore, Lyon’s stories focus on cunning tricksters and darker fairy folk drawn from firsthand accounts and folklore in the United States, Scotland, and Ireland.

“I have been collecting first-hand accounts of encounters with the fairy folk for several years and I have personally met witnesses who have encountered the fairy folk and who have shared their experiences with me,” Lyon said. He will also share some of his own experiences during the presentation.

 A Master Storyteller

Lyon is the creator of the popular Haunted Nevada City and Haunted Grass Valley walking tours and has a long history of bringing stories to life. He has toured several one-man plays, performed alongside notable actors, written multiple books, and presented at Ireland’s prestigious Listowel Writers’ Week Festival.

At past library events, Lyon has captivated audiences with stories of ghosts from the British Isles and local legends including the National Hotel in Nevada City and the Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley, the latter of which was featured in his film “Phantoms of the Holbrooke.”

“We’ve had so much fun hosting Mark for his presentations on ghosts because of his ability to really engage the audience with the stories,” said Brittany Blake, Adult Programming Coordinator for the Grass Valley Library. “When he mentioned collecting accounts of fairy folk encounters, it seemed like a great opportunity to bring that energy to a springtime event.”
