[ARCHIVED] County Partners to Bring Housing Development to Grass Valley

Old Tunnel Property Purchase NewsFlash

On December 11th, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to select Foothill House of Hospitality (Hospitality House) as the Identified Development Partner for round one of the No Place Like Home (NLPH) funding and development application.  The application for NPLH funding requires applicants have site control of property for the proposed project.

Nevada County began the required public notice process to purchase a 5 acre parcel of land located on Old Tunnel Road in Grass Valley earlier this week.  This property is situated in the City of Grass Valley and is close to many essential services such as shopping, banking and medical offices.

Nevada County Board of Supervisors Chair Ed Scofield says, "We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the City of Grass Valley and Hospitality House to help bring much needed housing to Nevada County in an area that allows easy access to services. This project wouldn't be possible without the collaboration of all parties involved.”

The goal is to develop the parcel as an affordable housing project in collaboration with the City of Grass Valley, Hospitality House and the Regional Housing Authority.  As property owner, the County would demonstrate a serious financial commitment to the development project and should score additional points in the NPLH application review while increasing the probability of securing affordability credits.

Grass Valley Mayor Lisa Swarthout says, "The City of Grass Valley looks forward to working with the County and Hospitality House on this vital project to bring much needed housing and services to the Community."

The topic of purchasing the property will come to the Board of Supervisors for consideration on the January 8, 2019 Board Meeting at 10:00 a.m. Public input on the proposed purchase of property on Old Tunnel Road is welcomed at that time. During that meeting, the Board will also consider the approval of a Memorandum of Understanding between Nevada County, Hospitality House and the Regional Housing Authority to partner together in the property development process.

"We look forward to working with the County and City to provide wraparound services in a housing setting," added Nancy Baglietto, Executive Director of Hospitality House. "No Place Like Home is the beginning of an important opportunity."

Leveraging County resources to expand opportunities to address housing affordability issues through partnerships with other jurisdictions, potential developers and the housing authority has been identified as a top priority for 2018 by the Board of Supervisors. The partnership with the City of Grass Valley, Hospitality House, and the Regional Housing Authority is an important step in strengthening the County's application to bring funding into the area and develop needed housing that is near essential services.
