County Weights and Measures Office Ensures Consumer Protection

Nevada County is joining government agencies across the country in celebrating National Weights and Measures Week.

It is celebrated the first week in March in commemoration of President John Adams’ first signing of a United States weights and measures law in 1799.

Nevada County’s Weights and Measures inspect and test commercial devices that use a weight or measure to ensure fair and accurate transactions take place. These include fuel meters, gasoline, liquid petroleum gas and oil and agricultural scales.

“This is for your protection,” said Agricultural Biologist Tony Romero, who monitors agriculture scales for the County. “We want to make sure the grower and whoever’s buying their product are getting what they are actually paying for.”

Marc Paquette, chair of the National Council on Weights and Measures, said the work is important to building community trust. “When consumers purchase gas, take a trip to the grocery store, receive a delivery of fuel at their home, or purchase anything by weight or measure, remember the dedicated staff from weights and measures programs around the country who work tirelessly to make sure you get what you pay for,” he said.
