With the winter months here, Nevada County staff has been working to plan for cold weather shelters for Nevada County’s homeless population this winter.
At the January 9th Board of Supervisors meeting, additional matching funding was approved to support overflow shelter at Hospitality House in Grass Valley. In partnership with the City of Grass Valley, this will provide beds and services for 15 more homeless individuals throughout the winter.
County staff has also been working in coordination with Nevada City and Sierra Roots staff to have a cold weather shelter in place for Nevada City. The agreement allows Sierra Roots to open and operate a cold weather shelter in City facilities. Recently, the agreement has expanded to increase the temperature threshold and weather related requirements to open a cold weather shelter in Nevada City. Staff from Nevada County will continue to provide technical support and resources for cold weather shelter services. Currently, Sierra Roots will be operating a Cold Weather Shelter the evenings of February 28th through March 2nd. For information on Cold Weather Shelter dates, visit Sierra Roots' website.
Nevada County Health and Human Services staff has created a multi-year plan to address homelessness in Nevada County. For more information about the plan and how to get involved visit Nevada County's Better Together web pages.
