SkillBridge
Nevada County develops custom made to order SkillBridge internships to meet your career aspirations and ensure transition back to civilian life is smooth.
This program allows Service members up to 180 days to intern with select employers to gain valuable skills to assist in transitioning from military service.
SkillBridge provides an invaluable chance to work and learn in civilian career areas. Service members participating in SkillBridge receive their military compensation and benefits, and Nevada County provides the training and work experience. Skillbirdge can help Service members bridge the gap between the end of service and beginning of their civilian careers.
Our Skillbridge program continues to grow in Nevada County to ensure you are fully prepared for your transition back to civilian life. We work with multiple partners to assist our Veterans and active duty members including our local VSO (Veterans Service Officer) David West who was recently awarded the National Honor of Employee Veterans Leadership award for his extensive work with Veterans in ours and surrounding counties. (See below link to read about the award.) We utilize these partnerships to integrate the VA claims process into all of our Skillbridge programs for every veteran. Assisting the Veteran from start to finish is our goal and ensuring you have access to file your VA claim while in our SkillBridge program is one way we ensure that.

What SkillBridge Participants Are Saying
“While participating in the Skill-Bridge program I was able to learn several different programs from the Human Resources department and overall hone my skills. I have worked as an ammo troop for the Air Force the last 4 years, which has been a great experience, but some of my training wasn’t as easily transferable for jobs outside the military. At the HR department, they were able to help me master different processes that they carry out and gain knowledge about the different departments/ opportunities in the county. Everyone was so willing to teach me and truly made me feel like part of the team. I feel more prepared now to separate from the Air Force and feel more enthusiastic on what the future holds. It was a pleasure participating in the Skill-Bridge program with Nevada County; I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”
- Stefani Naranjo
"I am so thankful for the opportunities and the relationships I formed as an intern in the Skillbridge Program. Transition from active duty to the civilian world after 22 1/2 years of service was a bit daunting but the County of Nevada staff have been so welcoming, supportive and friendly. This community along with the County of Nevada have so much to offer employees and I encourage you to reach out with questions or support as you transition into employment with this great organization.”
- Paul Cummings
“After 28+ years in the Air Force and settling to a new community, the DOD SkillBridge internship through Nevada County has provided me an amazing opportunity to transition to civilian life. Nevada County built a personalized SkillBridge that capitalized on my talents and background and matched those to the needs of the county. I gained valuable experience working with the Truckee Tahoe Airport Special District and the County Clerk on strategic planning projects the county is focused on. This experience was exactly what I needed after sprinting the past few years and afforded me the time to orient on post military life, as well as build a local network in my new community. I can’t say enough how fantastic Nevada County was at helping me and my family transition to civilian life; it’s a very professional organization and veteran friendly – thank you!”
- Jeff Menasco (Colonel, USAF)
“I am extremely grateful to Nevada County for their willingness to host me for 100 days through the SkillBridge program. From the initial contact with Human Resources to the final days, their team was constantly seeking ways to assist me and to provide opportunities to enhance my current skillset. The Nevada county Office of Emergency Services (OES) has a few Air Force veterans already on staff that either went through the program themselves or recently made their transition into the civilian life locally. I was happy to receive their advice and suggestions on avenues that assisted them. While my background is in firefighting, OES was a great parallel and allowed me to learn the aspects of the local government’s emergency response framework. In closing, I couldn’t be happier with the SkillBridge experience and the opportunity to come home to settle my family. Nevada County’s generosity enabled me to ease into the civilian sector."
- Mike Hulcy, SMSgt (USAF).
“Having my Skillbridge internship through Nevada County has been such a privilege and a life changing experience. I have learned so much in such a short period of time, and could see myself working here following my internship. All of my co-workers and supervisors have been so willing to mentor me and teach me all there is to know about my position as a Victim Advocate. I do not believe that I could have asked for a better transition out of Active Duty into the civilian workforce. Thank you Nevada County for allowing me to use the SkillbBridge program through you, and thank you to the District Attorney’s office for giving me the chance to work for you!”
- Haley Leonard
"The Skillbridge program and Nevada County has given me the opportunity to sharpen my professional skills, gain knowledge, and create a new career path. My internship is setting me up for future success and the professionals at Nevada County has really helped me transition into the civilian workforce."
- William Barreda
“It has been an incredible experience working here at the County for the past four months as I have undergone both professional and personal growth and changes in my life. I have learned a lot about how county government works in regard to its impact on the lives and health of the community and achieved some milestones thanks to the opportunities afforded to me at both the Health and Human Services Agency and at the Public Health Department. As an Active-Duty Soldier, I had no prior experience working in government at the county level, however, thanks to the kind, experienced and welcoming staff at the County, I quickly assimilated into the culture and became a part of the work and organization instantly upon my transition.”
- John Dalomba
“I am very grateful to have spent my SkillBridge at Nevada County. Transitioning from being in the infantry to working as an internship coordinator was a huge change for me. I was worried that I would have trouble in this new role because at first glance, I didn’t have any skills that would help me. However, through much coaching I realized that many skills I had learned in the military would easily transition to the civilian workforce. Nevada County allowed me the opportunity to gain extremely valuable experience that has already paid off in a large way. This SkillBridge opportunity offered me a very smooth transition and were more than accommodating to all my needs. I will truly miss the work environment at Nevada County and am truly grateful for all the time that I got to spend there.”
