Investigation on South Yuba River Plume Continues

As the investigation into the South Yuba River plume continues, Environmental Health has received new test results confirming that the South Yuba River and Englebright Reservoir are safe for recreational use. The test results from all eight of the water sample locations show that there are no toxic metals or high levels of E.coli in the Yuba River and Englebright Reservoir.

"It does not appear that any cannabis cultivation or active mining on the Kilham Road property was the cause at this time," said Nevada County Community Development Agency Director Sean Powers. "The investigation is complex and will take time."

Active Shooter Preparedness Exercise Provides Valuable Feedback

In an effort to promote the safety of the County and the public, Nevada County conducted its third Active Shooter Emergency Preparedness Exercise, this time at the Brighton Greens Campus, on Friday, October 4th.  The exercise was in response to the increase in active shooter events we have seen in schools and government agencies in recent years, and is a part of the County's Emergency Action Plan.

The exercise was successful and was conducted in under an hour.   County services were temporarily interrupted, and resumed immediately after the exercise was complete.

Probation Youth Center Employees Recognized by State Association

Nevada County Youth Center Senior Group Supervisor Frank Cook was recognized as the Supervisor of the Year for the Sacramento Region California Association of Probation Institution Association (CAPIA), and Senior Group Supervisor Rod Kahele is the winner of the CAPIA 2019 Jerry Darling Award.  Frank was recognized for his outstanding work changing lives with our Transitional Age Youth (TAY) population, while Rod was awarded the Jerry Darling Award for his devotion to the highest principals in the operation of a juvenile institution and his contributions to the field.

On several Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. in October, the Madelyn Helling Library will hold classes on how to start a business.

These classes cover topics such as how to research and organize information to prepare a business plan, define and organize your business's development and growth, and how to estimate startup expenses, project profit and loss for your first year in business.

October 8^th Board Meeting Preview

Board of Supervisors meetings take place every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Unless otherwise noted, at the beginning of each meeting, the public can address the Board on items that don't appear on the agenda, but are of public interest and are within the jurisdiction of the Board. Tuesday's October 8th meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Board Chambers at the Eric Rood Administrative Center in Nevada City.

Following public comment, the Board will consider resolutions accepting awards from the California Library Literacy Services including $18,000 for the Nevada County Library's Read Up! Literacy Program and $25,000 toward Family Literacy, in addition to $12,000 of in-kind book donations for Zip Book purchases from the California State Library.

Afterwards, the Board will consider sending a Letter of Support to the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board for Nevada County agriculture within the Sacramento Valley Water Quality Coalition to be recognized as low threat/low vulnerability for agriculture discharges, and to support new Waste Discharge Requirements for low threat geographical areas and crop types to reduce unnecessary administrative and financial burdens.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m., Planning Director Brian Foss will present and request approval of the Boca Quarry West Pit Expansion Project.

Library Hosts 2^nd Annual Local Author Showcase

The Nevada County Community Library is once again hosting a Local Author Showcase on Saturday, October 12th at the Eric Rood Administrative Center from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m in the Board Chambers and lobby. Panelists will include Chris Olander, Nevada County Poet Laureate; Leslie Rivers of Sierra Muses Press; Maria E Brower, author of many Nevada County titles; and Iven Lourie of Gateways Books and Artemis Books. 

This is the only book fair hosted by the Library each year, and is a chance for the Nevada County community to celebrate and get to know their local authors. Everyone is invited to this free event.
