Nevada County Breaks Ground on McCourtney Road Transfer Station Improvement Project

This week, District 4 Supervisor Sue Hoek and staff broke ground on the McCourtney Road Transfer Station (MRTS) Improvement Project. The project will repurpose the existing transfer station’s footprint to accommodate the increased traffic and demand for recycling and solid waste services and allow for the current State mandate for organic food waste collection and diversion.

“We are thrilled to break ground on this project for Nevada County residents. It’s been a long time, almost 11 years, in the making and will allow the transfer station to meet the County’s demand better,” Hoek said. “The new capacity and improvements will allow for quicker and easier turn around for both residents and contractors as well as reduce traffic impacts to property owners along McCourtney Road.”

All Veterans Survey Guides Nevada County VSO Planning

By David West, Nevada County Veterans Services Officer

I started my position as Nevada County Veterans Services Officer in September 2018. When I sat in that empty office on my first day, I swore to myself that I would always advocate for the veterans in this community, use the lessons I learned from past professions, and continually focus on offering the best services possible to veterans in our community.

In 2020, the Veterans Services Office released its first annual “All Veterans Survey” to the veterans of Nevada County. We used the responses provided to develop our strategic plan for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Last year’s survey results led to significant changes, improvements, and more diversity in how we offer our services to veterans.

In our continued effort to improve how we provide services to veterans, the Nevada County Veterans Services Office is once again creating an annual strategic plan. To develop the strongest plan possible, I am asking Nevada County’s active duty military members and veterans for their input by participating in this year’s All Veterans Survey.

SAFE Program Will Count Youth Experiencing Homelessness in Nevada County May 9th through 11th

The Nevada County Continuum of Care, in connection with Bright Futures for Youth’s SAFE program, will conduct a survey May 9th through 11th to determine how many children and young adults are experiencing homelessness or housing instability in Nevada County.

Youth homelessness is a fast-growing but often hard-to-see issue in Nevada County, where teens and young people may couch surf, sleep in vehicles, or even live in unsheltered areas. The Youth Point in Time Count will help determine the number of young people experiencing homelessness. With accurate data, nonprofit organizations and government agencies can apply for additional funding to provide more resources and services.

Student Activist Maddux Eckerling Brings Mental Health Message to the State Capitol

“I am here because exercise saved my life,” Maddux Eckerling told the crowd gathered outside of the State Capitol on May 1st to kick off California Moves for Physical and Mental Fitness Month.

Eckerling, who serves as the president of the Bring Change to Mind club at his high school in Western Nevada County, spent ten days in the hospital after attempting to end his own life in November of 2021. He credits exercise with helping his mental health. "Movement is the key to a happier day,” Eckerling said at the Capitol event.

As the nation struggles with rising mental health challenges among its youth, it’s important to highlight the efforts of young trailblazers like Eckerling, who aims to help his community by bringing awareness to the highest levels of government.
