Board Objective Report Highlights Progress on Community Priorities

By District 2 Supervisor and Board Chair Ed Scofield

To start the year, we faced the now familiar challenge of the winter storm, responding to widespread impacts and now, recovery. Although areas like Alta Sierra did not experience the same severe damage of last year’s storm, I can’t say the same for much of our County, with over 17,500 PG&E customers experiencing power outages and millions reported in damages.

Having been born and raised in Grass Valley, I’ve experienced my share of snow, but this storm was epic not only in the volume of snow but especially in the weight of the snow and the damage it created to homes and commercial businesses. Like last year, we saw neighbors helping neighbors and our government agencies leaning in to serve our community during the disaster. As my colleague Sue Hoek said, “2023 is the year of the heart.”

Equity & Inclusion Leadership Alliance Announces Community Survey

Some things are a crime, and some things just aren’t right! Safe and Unified Nevada County (SUN) believes we can address both--and build a stronger community--by sharing our experiences, finding common ground, and providing meaningful support to those negatively impacted by hate crimes and hate incidents in our area.

SUN is a subcommittee of the Equity & Inclusion Leadership Alliance (EILA), which consists of representatives from the Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) Coalition, county and municipal departments, law enforcement, the judicial system, healthcare, faith-based groups, education, the arts, the social justice non-profit Color Me Human, and other vital organizations. It is a vibrant mix of leaders working to address the current needs of our community and plan for a brighter future.

In the spirit of Victims’ Rights Week, SUN is asking all Nevada County residents to share their insights in the 2023 SUN Survey to move forward in the spirit of candor and collaboration.

Nevada County Environmental Health Announces 2023 Mosquito Fish Giveaway Days

Nevada County’s Environmental Health Department will host five Mosquito Fish Giveaways at the Eric Rood Center, all on Thursdays, beginning May 11th and going through July 6th.

“Mosquito fish consume a lot of insect larvae in ponds or other standing bodies of water,” explained Amy Irani, Environmental Health Director. “By reducing the mosquito population in larvae form, you can reduce the mosquito population and your risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases, including the West Nile Virus. My team also wants to remind folks to check and remove standing water from pots, bins, buckets, and tires. We all play a role in reducing the risk of infection.”
