Help Shape Recreation in Nevada County: Take the Public Survey, Available Now Through April 16th

The County of Nevada invites the public to take a survey about how recreation can be improved throughout the county. The survey provides an opportunity to share concerns, hopes, and ideas for the future of recreation in Nevada County. Input from all community members is needed--including seniors, students, families, businesses, regional partners, and more.

This survey is the first opportunity for the public to participate in the development of the Nevada County Recreation and Resiliency Master Plan. The Master Plan will identify recreation needs and articulate a long-term vision for managing open spaces and recreation resources that range from local parks, playgrounds, sports fields, and facilities to rivers, trails, and outdoor access.

Heidi hall and Doug Fleming stand together on the steps of the Nevada City Courthouse

No Zombie Buildings Here on Our Watch

By District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall and Nevada City Mayor Doug Fleming

We would have preferred the Nevada County Courthouse to remain at the top of Church Street in the heart of downtown Nevada City where it’s been since 1864 (though the first courthouse was a log structure built on Broad Street in 1851).

For over 150 years, Nevada County’s Courthouse has been the “historic, civic, cultural and economic centerpiece for Nevada County,” as noted by our Superior Court Judges. We appreciate the Judges’ warning: “There is a foreseeable risk that an empty, downtown courthouse could become a blight for the entire community…”

However, we accept the Judicial Council of California’s (JCC) decision to build a new courthouse at a new location within the greater Nevada City area. The JCC has an $8 Million request in Governor Newsom’s budget for acquisition in 2023, a sure sign of the State’s commitment to a new $178 Million courthouse with six courtrooms on a 4-5-acre lot.

What we will never accept is a vacant “zombie building” decaying on our watch.

Although a new courthouse likely won’t open before 2028 or even 2030, it’s not too soon to plan how the building may be re-used. That’s why we have teamed up to ensure that the County and the City work collaboratively with the Courts to ensure a smooth transition that includes the ongoing maintenance and ultimate re-use of the facility for the community’s benefit.

Community Resiliency Grant Spotlight: Supporting Artists with Developmental Disabilities at Neighborhood Center of the Arts

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and Nevada County is proud to support the work of the Neighborhood Center of the Arts (NCA), which provides arts-based training and education for adults with developmental disabilities.

NCA was one of many local nonprofits awarded funding through Nevada County’s Community Resiliency Grant program. The grant program provided one-time funding of up to $100,000 for local programs that increase resiliency, support recovery, and provide relief from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the grant money awarded, NCA was able to afford their rent for the past 12 months.

“Having a place to gather and provide services is a huge piece of how our organization is able to function. This grant was a huge relief to the program in our recovery process,” said NCA Executive Director Amee Medeiros.
