Be Prepared: Significant Rainfall Could Lead to Flooding in Nevada County This Weekend

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for most of interior Northern California Friday through early Sunday morning. Moderate to heavy rainfall could bring 3 to 7 inches of rain in the foothills and up to 9 inches of rain in the mountains, which may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and flood-prone areas.

The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services and the Town of Truckee are offering free sandbags to Nevada County residents (please bring your own shovel!) and our road crews are on call 24/7 during storm events to address roadway emergencies.

Nevada County and Sierra Roots Open Cold Weather Shelter

Due to the National Weather Service's prediction of significantly wet and cold weather, Sierra Roots and the County of Nevada activated the Cold Weather Shelter Protocol for Thursday and Friday nights.

The shelter will open again today at 4:30 p.m. at the Nevada City Veterans Hall and will accept guests until 8:00 p.m. The shelter will close at 7:30 a.m. This is a community-wide collaborative effort to temporarily shelter one of our most vulnerable populations during extreme weather events and connects homeless residents to additional services.

Love Local Trails? Say No To Mud This Rainy Season

Winter in the Sierra Nevada means one thing regardless of elevation – it’s our “rainy” season, be it frozen or of the liquid kind. And as any resident knows, precipitation in the Sierra comes in HUGE storms soaking the ground beyond its limit.

As organizations such as Bear Yuba Land Trust and Truckee Trails Foundations continue to work hard with agencies to create more trails, it's up to us as a community of trail users to respect the land. Be a good trail user, stay off muddy routes, and you'll get more trails. It's that simple.
