Over the past few days, the Mosquito Fire in Placer and El Dorado counties has grown to nearly 30,000 acres. Our community has leaned in to host friends and family who are evacuated or taking in their animals, and it’s another reminder to stay ready during fire season. Make sure you’re signed up for CodeRED emergency alerts, you know your zone and have go-bags ready, and you have a family emergency plan in place. Like our community, our County team continues to support our neighbors while also being ready for an emergency in one of our communities. Nevada County staff are supporting Placer County’s Emergency Operations Center, our Nevada County Fairgrounds and local animal evacuation team are assisting as an animal evacuation center, and Nevada County Sheriff deputies are assisting with evacuations and patrols. With many structures threatened and thousands of people under evacuation orders, The Placer Community Foundation has established the Mosquito Relief Fund to accept donations from those who wish to support local fire victims. If you can contribute, this is a great way to help our neighbors, as funds will go directly to the people impacted. Take care of each other, stay safe, and stay Ready Nevada County.

Mosquito Fire Air Quality AdvisoryThe Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District and the Public Health Department of Nevada County are issuing a Joint Air Quality Health Advisory due to smoke impacts from the Mosquito Fire in Placer and El Dorado Counties, CA near Oxbow Reservoir. Smoke impacts could result in air quality conditions in the Very Unhealthy to Hazardous ranges throughout the day. Air quality conditions change rapidly, and smoke may be intermittent and affect different areas dependent upon wind direction and time of day. Poor air quality has the potential to cause negative health impacts, particularly for sensitive groups and when exposure is prolonged. Exposure to elevated PM2.5 (fine particulate matter in smoke) concentrations can result in eye and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, congestion, coughing, impaired lung function and chest pain, especially among sensitive individuals such as the elderly, children, people with asthma, people with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women and anyone who is exercising or working hard outdoors.
