Officials Celebrate the Completion of Brunswick Commons ApartmentsNevada County celebrated the completion of the newly constructed Brunswick Commons housing development Monday, August 22, with speakers from Nevada County, the Regional Housing Authority, the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, and Hospitality House. The project will provide 41 units of affordable housing for individuals who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness.
Of the 41 units, one is designated for an onsite manager and 12 are set aside for permanent supportive housing, which provides supports for the successful housing of individuals with a mental health disability. The permanent supportive housing units are served by Nevada County Behavioral Health and Turning Point Community Programs. “This is a huge win for permanent supportive housing,” said Phebe Bell, Director of Behavioral Health Services for Nevada County. “Here, people find the behavioral health supports they need while also getting help with skills to be successful in housing.” Nevada County and Hospitality House have partnered to place individuals in the remaining units, with 33 one-bedroom units and 8 two-bedroom units for families. Eligibility for units at Brunswick Commons is based on the vulnerability ranking from the By-name List. The By-name list is an extensive list of everyone in the community engaged in services and experiencing homelessness and is ranked based on need. Read More

Nevada County Supervisors Approve Property Purchase for Sutton Way Wellness CenterAt their August 23rd meeting, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of property located at 1101-1105 Sutton Way in Grass Valley. The property, which is contiguous with the newly completed Brunswick Commons affordable housing development, will be converted into the Sutton Way Wellness Center. The Wellness Center will provide services to Nevada County residents--including residents of Brunswick Commons--and community members who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness.
"It's exciting to see the navigation center come together as people are beginning to move into Brunswick Commons next week," said District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall. "We identified this need several years ago, but it takes time to bring the funding and location together. Having the site conveniently located next to Brunswick Commons and our non-profit partners and being funded entirely by grant funding is a huge win for our community and connecting people with critical resources." New Policy Addresses Permitting Barriers for Unpermitted StructuresOn August 9th, the Board of Supervisors received a presentation from the Nevada County Building Department on its new Unpermitted Improvement Policy, formerly the As-Built policy. This revised policy addresses many of the hurdles and concerns for property owners and the development community. The goal of the policy is to embrace and incentivize proactive permitting to improve health and safety while not being punitive during the process.
Both the Building Department and the Community Development Agency (CDA) want to partner with the community to build successful and safe projects while also protecting property owners’ investments. While existing unpermitted structures and improvements can be common throughout rural Nevada County, many property owners want to legalize their property and/or obtain proactive building permits and other land-use permits. This process can be intimidating to the average homeowner. With the recently implemented policy, the Department hopes to make permitting more accessible, achievable, and remove barriers to obtaining permits.
