Senator Feinstein’s Staff Tour the Ponderosa West Grass Valley Defense Zone

When local funds are combined with state and federal funds, we can achieve more for public safety in Nevada County.

Last year, Senator Feinstein helped Nevada County secure $750,000 toward Phase 2 of the Ponderosa West Grass Valley Defense Zone and has recommended that Nevada County receives the same amount for maintenance of Phase 1 this year. This critical fuel break, which started with $3.5M in funding from CAL FIRE, improves evacuation routes, and protects downtown Grass Valley and 3,000 nearby homes from an eastward moving fire.

Recently, local leaders gave representatives from the Senator’s office a tour of the project and a bigger picture of plans to keep our community safe. Nevada County extends a hearty thanks to Senator Feinstein, CAL FIRE, and partners at Fire Safe Council for their role in supporting a wildfire-resilient Nevada County!

Heat Lingers

Heat to Linger into Saturday

National Weather Service Sacramento warns of the dangerous heat that will continue through Saturday evening for the Valley & Foothills. The high temperatures range between 96 and 110. During this extreme heat, it is important to reduce the risk of heat stress or injury. Stay hydrated, reduce your time in the sun between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and stay in a cool or shaded place during the heat of the day. All Nevada County Library branches are open on Saturday to cool off, with the Penn Valley Library having Open+ hours for library card holders.

This heat will limit overnight cooling and affect the majority of the population. Check on older, sick, or frail people who may need help responding to the heat. Each year, dozens of children and untold numbers of pets left in parked vehicles die from hyperthermia.  Keep your children, disabled adults, and pets safe during tumultuous heat waves.

Yuba River Cohort

South Yuba River Public Safety Cohort Celebrates 5 Years

The South Yuba River Public Safety Cohort, a multi-agency work group, recently celebrated five years of meeting monthly to coordinate public safety efforts in the Yuba River corridor.

That annual meeting eventually became a monthly meeting, now hosted by District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall and District 4 Supervisor Sue Hoek where the Cohort serves as a roundtable, troubleshooting safety issues in the entire South Yuba River Corridor. Those issues include garbage in the river canyon, illegal parking, drownings, slow emergency response times due to lack of cellular reception at the river crossings, and more.
