On June 19, 1865, those who were formerly enslaved were recognized as free citizens of the United States. Today, we commemorate June 19 as Juneteenth with celebrations across the country.

The emancipation of people who were enslaved is a powerful moment in our nation's history, but there is still more work to be done. On Juneteenth, we remember our nation's history of systemic racism and inequality and recommit ourselves to the work of equity, equality, and justice. The County and our community partners participating in the Equity and Inclusion Leadership Alliance remain committed to the work required to examine our past, end racial bias, and build new, meaningful connections in our community.

Lost and Found Gravel Grinder race

Gravel Rides to Support a Cause

District 5 Supervisor Hardy Bullock, Chief Probation Officer Jeff Goldman, and CEO Project Administrator Ariel Lovett put in the miles on June 4 to support the nonprofit Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship and their Connected Communities initiative at the Lost Sierra Lost and Found Gravel Grinder race. With 30, 60, and 100-mile distances, the race benefits the nonprofit dedicated to restoring, maintaining, and enhancing recreation trails in Tahoe, Plumas, and Lassen National Forests.

Bullock and Goldman, both dedicated cyclists, completed the 100-mile race, while Lovett rode the 60-mile distance with her husband, Ben. "The ride was incredibly beautiful and super challenging," said Lovett. "I can see why it's called the Lost Sierra, and it felt great to be out there with all these other folks in support of such a great cause. I'm looking forward to the second annual Heart of Gold Gravel race and to having a strong Nevada County contingent out there!"

Although registration has not opened yet, mark your calendar for the Heart of Gold Gravel race in Nevada City on October 8. All proceeds support teen mental wellness in Nevada County. Last year's inaugural ride raised over $38,000 with over 200 registered riders.

As California’s Traditional Fire Season Starts, PG&E Turns on Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings Across All High Fire-Risk Areas

PG&E's Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) now protect about 3 million people, or more than 1 million customers, who live in high fire-risk areas within the company’s service area.

The safety settings turn off power within one-tenth of a second when a fault, such as a tree limb coming into contact with a powerline, is detected. Last year, on 170 circuits with safety settings enabled, there was an 80% reduction in CPUC-reportable ignitions in High Fire Threat Districts that could result in a wildfire, compared to the prior three-year average.

PG&E expects that the safety settings will remain enabled on 700 to 800 of those circuits between now and the end of the wildfire season. For customers on the other approximately 200 circuits, the technology will be enabled on days when there is a Red Flag Warning and disabled when weather conditions, such as heavy coastal fog, are favorable.
