Nevada County Library Announces its 2022 Summer Learning Program

Nevada County Library is pleased to announce the start of the 2022 Summer Learning program. Summer Learning is a countywide event that takes place from June 13th to August 13th. Community members can enjoy fun events and reading challenges across Nevada County throughout the duration of the program.

This year’s Summer Learning theme is “Read Beyond the Beaten Path.” Nevada County Library is encouraging patrons to get outdoors and enjoy nature in addition to completing reading challenges for all ages.

Summer Learning has long had a reading log component that can be completed by adults, children, and teens. In addition to five reading challenges, this year’s Summer Learning log asks patrons to complete five outdoor activities to finish the program. There will be a prize drawing featuring local businesses for anyone who signs up for a reading log and an additional prize drawing for those completing all ten summer learning challenges! Kids and teens who complete and turn in their summer learning logs will also receive a free ride ticket for the Nevada County Fair! Paper logs can be picked up at your local branch or come and see us at the Nevada County Farmer’s Market on the 2nd and 4th weekends of the month.

Behind on Your Property Taxes? The California Mortgage Relief Program May Be Able to Help

The California Mortgage Relief Program is helping homeowners with a mortgage, a reverse mortgage, or who are mortgage-free get caught up on past due housing payments, including financial assistance for past-due mortgages and property taxes. Using $1 billion in federal funds, the grants help homeowners who had a financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic. Assistance provided through this program is not a loan and does not need to be paid back.

Beginning June 13, 2022, unpaid property taxes for all eligible homeowners will be covered by the program. Assistance with past-due property taxes will extend to mortgage-free homeowners and those whose mortgage payments are current. Previously, property taxes were only covered for reverse mortgage holders or as part of a complete reinstatement for homeowners who were also behind on their mortgage.

Construction Work and Travel Delays Continue on State Route 20

Caltrans is reminding motorists to expect continued travel delays and one-way traffic control at multiple locations on State Route 20 (SR-20) in Nevada County through the summer and fall months.

Major construction work on the SR-20 Omega Curves project began earlier this year with one-way traffic needed during construction activities. Motorists should expect 20-minute travel delays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays at both the White Cloud and Lowell Hill work areas. Crews are installing or rehabilitating drainage, performing earth work to widen sections of the roadway and removing trees and vegetation.

The work is part of the $62.5 million Omega Curves project, which aims to improve safety and reduce collisions on SR-20 by realigning curves on two non-contiguous segments near White Cloud and Lowell Hill, widening shoulders, improving the highway’s sight distance and adding designated left-turn lanes near Conservation Road and Washington Road. In addition, three turnouts will be added where slow-moving vehicles can allow motorists to safely pass, while also serving as traffic-enforcement locations for the California Highway Patrol.
