A study on the Nevada City Courthouse facility is underway by the California Courts. A minimum of three options will be studied to analyze the feasibility of:

  • Renovating the existing Nevada City Courthouse.
  • Replacing all or part of the existing courthouse on the existing site.
  • Building a new courthouse in a new location.

CAL FIRE Awards Nevada County a Storm Damage Grant

CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit (NEU) has secured funding for a direct funded grant to mitigate the impacts of the damaging heavy storm event that began on December 27th, 2021.

The primary goal of the grant is to provide financial support to focus wildfire risk mitigation efforts on community protection, ingress, and egress. Due to the heavy snowfall, significant quantities of downed trees and broken treetops have been added to already heavy fuel loading. This material will become dry and available to burn this coming summer. The grant aims to assist in buffering main evacuation routes and corridors for the safety of the traveling public and responding fire resources.

“We’re grateful for CAL FIRE’s tireless support during the storm and afterward with the cleanup,” said Supervisor Ed Scofield, whose district includes some of the hardest-hit areas this winter. “There is still a lot of work to do. This grant will directly support clearing fuels from key evacuation routes in Nevada County before they can become a dangerous source of fuel this fire season.”

CAL FIRE NEU Hosts County and City Leadership at Reader Ranch Exercise

County staff joined CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit (NEU) for their annual Type I Fire Crew Certification Exercises this year at the Reeder Ranch in Nevada County. Crews from the Placer CCC Fire Center, Washington Ridge Fire Crew Camp, Grass Valley Crew, and the California National Guard Task Force Rattlesnake Crew all participated in the exercise this year.

These exercises, held around the State, are an important part of certifying Fire Crews in preparation for the upcoming wildfire season. Fire Crews not only perform wildland firefighting but participate in search and rescue, flood control, and other all-risk emergency incidents. The exercises test the organization and fortitude of these crews by putting them through physical fitness tests, line construction, fire shelter drills, and general readiness exercises.

“Our Type I Fire Crews across the State are truly the backbone of our firefighting resources and perform critical firefighting missions both locally and across the state on large, damaging wildfires,” said CAL FIRE Unit and Fire Chief Brian Estes.

First Mosquito Fish Giveaway on Thursday, May 5th

The Nevada County Environmental Health Department Vector Control Program will be holding Mosquito Fish Giveaways on five Thursday afternoons throughout May and June. Next week, the first giveaway event is on Thursday, May 5th, from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Eric Rood Administrative Center.

Mosquito Fish can consume large quantities of insect larvae in your pond or other standing bodies of water. By reducing the mosquito population, you can reduce your risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases, including the West Nile Virus.

“Our mosquito fish giveaways are one of our most popular events each year and are important to reducing mosquito larvae to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus. This year we added eating tubes to our fish tanks, which helped our fish survive the winter and improved the survival of offspring, giving us more fish to distribute to the community,” said Amy Irani, Environmental Health Director.
