Final Free Storm Green Waste Disposal Event This Weekend

Nevada County contracted with the Fire Safe Council to offer free storm-related green waste disposal to Nevada County residents for three extended weekends this spring. The program wraps up this weekend, with drop-off events planned for April 8th, 9th, and 10th.

The disposal program is designed to help homeowners address the storm debris, like tree trunks and branches, on their properties in advance of fire season. The community green waste drop-off events will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 12625 Brunswick Road in Grass Valley.

“Understanding what you need to clean up is the first step and the best way to get started. People make the mistake of thinking it can all be done effectively in one weekend. It is best done with some planning to help your time and money go the farthest,” says Office of Emergency Services (OES) Program Manager, Paul Cummings.

The Nevada County Community Library is proud to announce a new project to give every newborn child born at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital a gift of their first book. This project is in collaboration with the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation and was inspired by the Read Me a Story Foundation, which gives children a new book each year at their well child visit.

This program is designed to promote early literacy and remind families the library is a welcoming and engaging place for them. Dawn Schultz, manager of the Family Birth Center is happy to be partnering with the library on this project and explains, “The families are so happy to receive an extra special gift to take home for their new baby. The families have been very excited and in awe to hear that this is given to them by our local library. In today's day and age, it is such a wonderful and nice token to receive something so sweet.”

Nevada County & Town of Truckee Staff Tour FOREST?FIRE Exhibit

This past week, Truckee Town Councilmember Anna Klovstad along with Nevada County District 5 Supervisor Hardy Bullock, hosted an artist-led tour of the FOREST?FIRE exhibit for agency staff and elected leaders  at the Truckee Community Recreation Center.

The nationally recognized FOREST?FIRE exhibit features the art of 18 California writers and artists to tell the story of the Sierra Nevada Forest’s 13,000-year relationship with fire, and the surprising and essential role humans play within it. The exhibit offers an economically sustainable vison for the future of the forest, highlighting how fire can be a tool in returning the forest to resiliency.

As both Nevada County Board of Supervisors and Truckee Town Council have recognized emergency preparedness as a priority, the exhibit offered an interactive platform to allow for robust dialogue amongst agency staff and leadership after the tour.

The free exhibit is open to the public at the Truckee Community Recreation Center through June.
