Nevada County Launches “Need for Speed” Broadband Survey

Nevada County invites all residents and businesses to participate in a new survey that will assess high-speed internet (or “broadband”) availability and reliability across the County. The results of the survey will help the County prioritize new broadband projects, apply for funding, and advocate to elected officials and state regulators.

“We need a precise snapshot of internet access in Nevada County. We know there is a need out there. Now we are asking for the public’s help to get an accurate picture of where the gaps in service are,” says Nevada County Board of Supervisors Chair Sue Hoek.

The survey, at www.mynevadacounty.com/broadband, takes less than 5 minutes to fill out and is available in both English and Spanish. Respondents who have internet access will be prompted to test their internet speed and provide the results. Those with slow speeds or no available internet at all are especially encouraged to participate.

Neighbors helping each other to prepare residential green waste for free green waste drop-off event

Free Storm Green Waste Disposal Event Continues This Weekend

Nevada County is contracting with the Fire Safe Council to offer free storm-related green waste disposal to Nevada County residents for three extended weekends this spring. Over 2,000 loads of green waste was collected in the first weekend, and two weekends are left.

This disposal program is designed to help homeowners address the storm debris, like tree trunks and branches, on their properties in advance of fire season. The community green waste drop-off events will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 12625 Brunswick Rd, Grass Valley, on the following days:

  • March 25th, 26th & 27th
  • April 8th, 9th & 10th

“Understanding what you need to clean up is the first step and the best way to get started. People make the mistake of thinking it can all be done effectively in one weekend. It is best done with some planning to help your time and money go the farthest,” says Office of Emergency Services (OES) Program Manager, Paul Cummings.

YubaNet: Getting Ready for Peak Fire Season – Plan and Practice with Your Kids

As a parent you want to keep your kids safe from any harm and preparing for wildfire is part of protecting them. Talk to them about the family emergency plan and enlist their help if possible. Let’s face it, many kids know more about apps and texting than their parents…

You are the best judge if your child is ready to participate in packing their own Go Bag. Ask them which item is an absolute “must have” in their emergency kit, after you discuss what the kit is for and why you are preparing now for a possible wildfire.

Your kids should have the family communications plan and all important phone numbers with them at all times.
