Supervisors Approve Countywide EIR to Expedite Shovel-Ready Broadband ProjectsOn Tuesday, October 12th, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a contract to conduct a Countywide Programmatic Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to meaningfully increase the viability of universal and accessible broadband throughout Nevada County.
“This will put Nevada County in the position to have shovel-ready projects, putting us first in line for competitive state and federal broadband dollars,” said Board Chair Dan Miller.

Emergency Broadband Benefit Funds Available Now for Low-Income FamiliesThe Federal Communications Commission (FCC) launched the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program to help connect low-income families to the internet by subsidizing their internet service. EBB is a temporary program that provides eligible households a benefit of up to $50 off their monthly internet bill during the pandemic. Some EBB providers are also offering an additional benefit of up to $100 that can be used to purchase a connected device such as a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet.
Households interested in the EBB program can apply online at www.GetEmergencyBroadband.org. This program was established in 2021 to increase connectivity and access to reliable internet during the COVID-19 pandemic emergency. EBB may be valid for 6 months or until funds run out. More Information

Greater Higgins Area Plan Project and WorkshopNevada County is kicking off an exciting project to help guide future development and amenities in the Higgins Corner and Lake of the Pines area in the South County region.
As part of the project, the County is conducting an extensive community engagement process to hear from community members about goals and vision for the future of the Greater Higgins area. The first community workshop will be held on Thursday, October 21st from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Zoom. This is the first of four meetings. The meeting will include a short presentation on the project goals and background, followed by visioning discussions in small groups.

United Way of Nevada County Campaign Kick-Off Month: October 15th-November 14thOn Tuesday, October 12th, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to proclaim October 15th-November 14th as United Way of Nevada County Campaign Kick-Off month.
United Way's mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community and brings together 19 partner agencies to provide services that address a broad range of issues including health, income and education. This year, United Way of Nevada County is celebrating its 39th year in the community. The United Way of Nevada County 2021 campaign motto is “Nevada County Strong: Together We Will Create a Better Tomorrow” and aims to raise over $100,000 in yearly donations by the end of 2021 to help increase community access to health care, food and emergency shelter.

Sierra College Dedicates Nevada County Campus Fire Training TowerSierra College dedicated its new fire training tower at the Sierra College Nevada County Campus (NCC) Public Safety Training Center (PSTC) in Grass Valley on October 12, 2021. The fire training tower will be used for live fire drills, during which students will learn to work in the dark and in confined spaces, to use breathing apparatus in thick smoke, and fight live fire. The tower will also provide training for students studying law enforcement and emergency medical services. County leadership, including District IV Supervisor Sue Hoek, attended to celebrate the new addition to the Sierra College Nevada County Campus. “The importance of local training for the next generation of first responders has never been clearer than right now, and right here at the edge of the urban-wildland interface in Nevada County,” said Willy Duncan, Sierra College’s Superintendent/President at the dedication event.

First-Ever Heart of Gold Bike Race, November 20thAs many as 400 bike enthusiasts, including many from the Bay Area and Southern California, are expected to compete November 20th in the first-ever Heart of Gold, a challenging gravel course race that starts in Nevada City and will help increase awareness and raise funds for mental wellness programs for youth in the community. The Heart of Gold race will start at 8:00 a.m. at the Eric Rood Administration Center, 950 Maidu Ave. in Nevada City, and will wind through western Nevada County, including over the Yuba River (twice), through the historic towns of North Bloomfield and Washington, and up very steep hills. The race is for avid bikers comfortable with 7,200 feet of vertical climbs – and is not designed for entry-level riders.
