The 2021 Ready, Set, Go! Handbook is Here

The 2021 Ready, Set, Go! Handbook has arrived! All Nevada County residents are encouraged to check their mailboxes this week as copies have been sent to every household. Extra copies will be available in the Eric Rood Center lobby or as a digital download formatted to print at home.

All family members should participate in reviewing the updated content, refreshing an evacuation plan, replenishing Go Bags, as well as finding and writing down their evacuation zone, page 24. This year additional resources are available to make it even easier for everyone to get involved. Even the teens in our community have a spot to help their families prepare. A webpage created by the Nevada County library features a survey to prompt teens to think about how prepared they are and provide important feedback. “The high school librarians let us know that teens really wanted access to this information. We hope the survey will show teens how to improve their plan as well as help us to better support young people who may be home without a caregiver during fire season.” said Youth Services Librarian, Mellisa Hannum.

CAL FIRE Suspends Burn Permits in Nevada, Yuba, and Placer Counties

The increasing fire danger posed by the high volume of dead grass and hotter, drier conditions in the region is prompting CAL FIRE to suspend all burn permits for outdoor residential burning within the State Responsibility Area of Nevada, Yuba, and Placer Counties. This suspension takes effect 8:00 a.m., Monday, May 24th and bans all residential outdoor burning of landscape debris such as branches and leaves.

Since January 1st, 2021 CAL FIRE and firefighters across the state have already responded to 2,038 wildfires. While outdoor burning of landscape debris by homeowners is no longer allowed, CAL FIRE is asking residents to take that extra time to ensure that they are prepared for wildfires by maintaining a minimum of 100 feet of Defensible Space around their homes and any outbuildings on their property and be prepared to evacuate if the time comes.

Free Green Waste Disposal Event

Free Residential Green Waste Disposal Launches Friday, May 21st, in Grass Valley

The first of two free residential green waste disposal events for Nevada County residents kicks off this Friday, May 21st. Residents will have an opportunity to drop off their green waste at no cost to them, Friday, May 21st through Monday, May 24th, from 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Residents may access the site, 12625 Brunswick Rd, Grass Valley, from East Bennett and Millsite Roads. Volunteers will be on-site to help with traffic flow and check-in. Fire Safe Council of Nevada County (Fire Safe Council) staff will also be available to help residents unload their vehicles.

“We know free is always appreciated. These past few years, we have seen an uptick in resident participation. We expect even more to take advantage of it this spring especially due to the economic impacts of COVID,” says Jamie Jones Executive Director of the Fire Safe Council. Every year homeowners are encouraged to create and maintain defensible space. Building a buffer between a structure and the grasses, trees, and shrubs that surround is essential to slowing or stopping a wildfire. Defensible space helps protect homes while providing greater safety for firefighters who may need to take a stand to defend property.

CDPH Releases "Beyond the Blueprint" Guidance Effective June 15th

As Californians get vaccinated, the state is reopening and moving beyond the Blueprint for a Safer Economy. The purple, red, orange and yellow tiers that helped us manage COVID-19 in our counties are on track to end on June 15th, in addition to implementing the CDC’s guidelines around masking to allow fully vaccinated Californians to go without a mask in most indoor settings. . While very limited measures will remain, Californians will see life getting back to normal.

As such, all sectors listed in the current Blueprint Activities and Business Tiers Chart may return to usual operations (with the limited exceptions for Mega Events). Employers are subject to the current Cal/OSHA COVID-19 Prevention Emergency Temporary Standards (ETS), if applicable to them. As the state continues to monitor the transmission and effects of COIVD-19 and its many variants, CDPH strongly encourages the following general public health recommendations:
  • Everyone should get vaccinated when eligible.
  • Indoor spaces should be well ventilated (i.e., open all windows and doors to increase natural air flow), following current CDPH and CalOSHA guidance.
  • Everyone should sign up for CA Notify as an added layer of protection for themselves and the community to receive alerts when they have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19.
Beyond the Blueprint Guidance

New Resource to Make COVID-19 Vaccinations More Convenient for Workers

The state's new Employer Vaccination Toolkit provides employers with vaccine education materials, information on COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave and other guidance for employees, and an online form to request vaccination support.

Employers interested in requesting group appointments at nearby providers, or setting up a mobile or pop-up vaccination clinic at their workplace, will complete an online form. A representative will follow up within three business days, and requests will be filled as resources allow. There is no financial cost to the employer. If approved after completing the survey, the California Department of Public Health will provide the employer a list of local vaccination partners able to support their request. Depending on the employer’s available resources, they may be asked to arrange necessary logistics as requested by the vaccine provider, including space to be used as vaccination stations.
