Independence Trail Coalition Forms for Phase One Rebuild! In September 2020, a multi agency and stakeholder committee formed to plan for the repair and restoration of the Independence Trail to modern standards. The group has identified various funding source, from FEMA assistance to grants. Planning efforts are ongoing and will include cost estimates of the damage, surveys, planning, permits and a phased reconstruction of the trail, with the most immediate and urgent need to stabilize the soil and protect against public safety hazards and residual runoff into the Yuba River. BYLT and its nonprofit partners are working to identify State budget and recovery resources through advocacy to our District and State legislators.
Recognizing the historical and community importance of the Independence Trail, there is a joint commitment to rebuild the trail among public agencies like California State Parks and the County of Nevada, as well as by Bear Yuba Land Trust, Sierra Gold Parks Foundation, FREED and the South Yuba River Citizens League. It’s going to take a community-wide effort to rehabilitate the Independence Trail and surrounding land for the safety and enjoyment of all!

Rewatch A Convo with the Cohort: Virtual Town Hall on the Yuba RiverWith the summer season nearing its end, YubaNet teamed up with Yuba River Public Safety Cohort on Wednesday, September 30th to discuss with the public the work accomplished, pursued and needed to address the challenges faced at the South Yuba River.
In 2020, we have seen an unprecedented number of visitors throughout the river corridor that has created major risks to public safety and impacts of ecological damage to the watershed that include escaped campfires, overflowing trash, illegal parking, illegal dispersed camping, and calls for emergency services. On August 17th, the community’s worst nightmare became a reality when the Jones Fire broke out within the river canyon that ultimately burned 705 acres, destroyed 21 structures, and threatened thousands of homes and the cities of Nevada City and City of Grass Valley highlighting the urgency of public safety. Topics included water safety, increased visitation due to COVID-19, parking, trash, Jones Fire impacts, wildfire prevention and more.

Code Enforcement Week: October 4th through 10thDuring the week of October 4th through October 10th, people across California will join together to recognize the important role that code professionals serve to promote the general health and safety of the public and environment. These professionals work tirelessly in the community to ensure property owners are abiding by County, State, and Federal laws and regulations dealing with various issues of building, zoning, housing, environmental, health, and life safety. Upholding these regulations is pivotal in maintaining a safe community for residents and visitors alike.
In 2019 alone, Nevada County Code and Cannabis staff investigated approximately 532 complaints regarding various violations of County, State, and Federal laws and regulations. Code professionals sometimes find themselves as the connecting point between property owners and County and State services. Members of our community are encouraged to join together during Code Compliance Appreciation Week to honor those who work to make our communities a safer place to live and recreate.

Bright Futures for Youth: Investing in Youth Today and TomorrowThe COVID-19 pandemic and shelter in place order is challenging youth – and all of us – in new ways, as we continue to contend with isolation and uncertainty. For pre-teens to young adults with little control over their lives, this isolation can lead to dramatically increased anxiety, stress and despair – and the need for mental health support.
You can count on The Friendship Club, which recently merged with NEO Youth Center to create opportunities for our youth, and in turn, for our community to thrive. Soon to be known as Bright Futures for Youth, the nonprofit is expanding to provide comprehensive academic, emotional, and social support to several hundred girls and boys ages 11-25 throughout the greater Grass Valley/Nevada City region.
