Excessive Heat Warning

Extreme Heat Next Week: Stay Cool and Stay Safe

Temperatures are projected to hit 100 degrees in parts of Western Nevada County. Extreme heat impacts are expected through at least next Thursday as the longest stretch of hot weather of the season is forecast.

During this heat wave, the Nevada County Public Health Department and Office of Emergency Services would like to remind everyone that higher temperatures can be dangerous for all people but especially the very young, senior citizens, and those with chronic medical conditions. Due to COVID-19 many traditional cooling areas are not open, so residents are encouraged to take extra precautions in planning for the heat. If residents must mix households in order to find relief with air conditioning, they should take all COVID-19 related precautions including facial covering, hand washing, 6 feet physical distancing and disinfection of high touch surfaces.

CodeRED Survey

Thank you for Participating in the CodeRED Emergency Alert Test

August 12, 2020, the Office of Emergency Services conducted a test of the CodeRED Emergency Alert System and now they are seeking feedback. Share your experience by completing the Community Survey.

More than 150 surveys have already been submitted providing valuable information about the emergency alert test. Many residents shared that the alert appeared to be a sales or spam call due to an automated announcement preceding the notification. The Office of Emergency Services has taken steps to prevent this from happening in the future. Moving forward, alerts will begin with a recording of a human voice that will state, "CodeRED Emergency Alerts from County of Nevada".

Defensible Space Assistance

Defensible Space Assistance for Residents with Disabilities and Older Adults Now Available

To reduce the threat of wildfire, the Office of Emergency Services (OES) and Fire Safe Council of Nevada County (FSCNC) are partnering to provide free defensible space clearing services to 15 homeowners who are low-income seniors or individuals with disabilities. FSCNC is now accepting applications. Space is limited and residents are encouraged to apply today. A waitlist will be maintained, and residents will be served as future funding becomes available.

"We are pleased that our partnering agencies, see the importance of funding this pertinent program for members of our community that are most in need of help with wildfire preparedness. The Fire Safe Council is encouraging residents to submit applications, as more funding opportunities are now on the horizon. This program, formerly called the Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP), has lacked grant funding for a few years, and we’re ecstatic that we can once again provide free assistance to those in need,” said Jamie Jones, Executive Director of the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County.
