As Nevada County's Director of Health and Human Services, I am responsible for both the Public Health Department addressing COVID-19, and the safety net services that will be necessary in the pandemic's aftermath. I am also a husband and father of three. As both of those things, I will tell you this: It is natural to be frightened by this unprecedented pandemic, and yet panic is not helpful.

In recent days we've seen a cascading series of extreme measures, from closing schools and limiting restaurants, to counties ordering non-essential activities to cease, to a statewide order to shelter in place. It's important to have some context around why these actions are being taken.

Supervisors Launch Nevada County COVID-19 Business Task Force

Last Friday, over seventy-five business and nonprofit leaders participated in a kick-off video call to launch the “Nevada County COVID-19 Business Task Force,” co-chaired by Board Chair Heidi Hall and Vice Chair Dan Miller.

Task Force members include leaders of countywide business organizations, nonprofits, and elected officials with an extensive reach to all sectors of the economy. To date, over 65 organizations such as the Chambers of Commerce, merchant associations, nonprofits, and others active in the economic health as well as the elected leadership of Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Truckee have joined the effort.

Nevada County Provides FAQs on California "Stay-at-Home" Order

On March 19th, Governor Newsom issued Executive Order N-33-20, requiring all persons residing in the State to remain in their homes or places of residence, except as needed to maintain the continuity of operations for critical infrastructure

In an effort to provide more clarity of the statewide Stay-at-Home Order, Nevada County has prepared answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about what is allowed, and what isn't. These FAQs are available online at www.mynevadacounty.com/coronavirus. Public Health Clarifies "Stay-at-Home" for Short-term Rentals

Nevada County Health Officer, Dr. Ken Cutler, has issued a local Order to clarify that while short-term lodging facilities may help temporarily house local homeless populations or critical infrastructure workers, they should not house people for non-essential needs such as short-term vacation rentals. This Nevada County Order applies to hotels, motels, condominiums or other units. If a short-term rental does not fit into the categories listed in the local Order, it should be closed.

Due to the statewide Stay-at-Home Order, many volunteer opportunities have been temporarily suspended. Connecting Point is using their Volunteer Hub to highlight volunteer opportunities that can be done remotely and support essential services.

WIC Card

All WIC Services are Available by Phone or Video Chat

All WIC services are available by phone or video chat. Community members should call their local clinic to enroll or certify, obtain future food benefits, reschedule, get breastfeeding help, or to get questions answered.

For community members already receiving WIC benefits, the state has auto-issued one month of benefits and extended some certifications. Please check your California WIC app for benefits and appointment status.

California State Parks Takes Additional Steps to Help Slow Down the Spread of COVID-19

California State Parks today announced it is temporarily closing vehicle access to 59 additional state parks and beaches to avoid dangerous visitation surges and help prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Locally, Donner State Memorial Park, Kings Beach State Recreation Area, North Tahoe Beach, Sugar Pine Point State Park, Emerald Bay State Park (Vikingsholm Parking Lot), South Yuba River State Park and Empire Mine State Historic Park will closing all vehicle entrances and parking lots. However, pedestrian access will be allowed.

BYLT Encourage Responsible Social Distancing on Trails

Bear Yuba Land Trust Reminds Hikers to Practice Social Distancing on Trails

During the statewide Shelter-at-Home Order, Bear Yuba Land Trust (BYLT) has posted signs at most trailheads with proper social distancing rules which should be followed at all times, including to not use trails if you are sick with respiratory symptoms, maintaining social distancing of 6 feet or more, not gathering in groups and being with only those who live in your household and following CDC personal hygiene guidelines before and after using trails. They are also encouraging neighborhood nature exploration to avoid crowding at parking lots or non-essential travel.

Please remember, if a trail looks busy, walk somewhere else and do your part by being a responsible user. Visit BYLT.org for more information and to locate a trail near you.

Nevada County Services Available Online

The County will continue to provide essential services such as law enforcement, wastewater, roads maintenance, emergency services, transit, social services, behavioral health and public health services.

The County has implemented telecommuting and teleconferencing for employees, where appropriate and feasible. Although there may be changes in the delivery of services, many services are going to continue in remote or online formats. Residents are encouraged to find remote and e-services online at www.mynevadacounty.com/coronavirus.
