Accessible Voting Information

Nevada County Elections believes in giving all voters the opportunity to vote privately and independently. Our office also wants to expand opportunities for voters with accessibility needs to conduct their own research and get the election information required to make informed choices.

Voters have the option to vote from home, access a vote by mail ballot remotely from home, vote in person at a vote center -- inside and curbside, and the right to receive information. 

Register to Vote

All California voters have several options for how to get registered and update registration, including options that can be completed from the convenience of your home. Please refer to our page about voter registration to learn more: https://nevadacountyca.gov/703/Voter-Registration. 

Vote by Mail

All active registered voters are provided with a ballot in the mail. Those ballots are mailed no later than 29 days before an election. Please be sure that your registration is current and give our office a call if you have not received yours. Remote Accessible Vote by Mail Ballot

The Elections Office can email you a digital vote-by-mail ballot. You may mark the ballot on a computer and then print it, or mark it after it has been printed.

The ballot must be returned by mail or in-person to the Nevada County Elections Office. Military and Overseas Voters may return a digital ballot by fax.

Accessible Voting at Vote Centers

Every vote center is surveyed to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

All vote centers have ballot marking devices called Touch Writers that offer large print options and audio options in English or Spanish. Each Touch Writer comes equipped with Tactile Switches and Sip and Puff ports. Magnifying tools and signature guides are available for use, and our friendly staff can help you if you request.

Curbside Voting 

You may vote on a paper ballot from your car at a curbside location outside of the vote center. Two vote center workers will help you so that you can vote and cast a ballot from your car.

To request curbside voting assistance, you may:

  • Call in advance to coordinate a time and place
  • Have an assistant make the request inside the vote center
  • Ring the bell outside of a vote center to inform staff that you would like assistance
